Overview

When Getmyboat sought to expand its marketplace monetization beyond rentals, I led the design of Captain as a Service — a new self-serve booking model connecting renters with professional captains. The initiative introduced a second revenue stream, automated a multi-party payout system, and drove $1.7M in new revenue within three months.

Renters lacked clarity around captain availability, pricing, and responsibility — leading to confusion, abandoned bookings, or off-platform coordination.

Solution

Introduced captain pricing directly into the booking flow, allowing owners to set and include captain costs as part of the total trip price. This created upfront transparency, simplified checkout, and strengthened trust between all parties.

The original ledger architecture and pricing module were disconnected and lacked support for tracking captain or add-on payments.

Solution

Redesigned the pricing system and receipt architecture to support multi-line items and captain add-ons. Introduced a modern ledger UI that reflected all services in real time, improving financial transparency and reducing booking disputes.

Owners had to coordinate and pay captains outside the platform, resulting in lost revenue, compliance risks, and inconsistent user experiences.

Solution

Introduced a new Captain user type and launched an in-platform Captain Invite feature that brought all payments under Getmyboat’s system. This kept transactions secure, automated payouts, and ensured compliance across global market

Results

This project reinforced how clarity drives conversion—when users understood exactly what they were paying for, they booked faster and with more confidence. It also highlighted the importance of aligning early with Finance, Legal, and Operations to ensure feasibility in multi-party payment design. Going forward, I’d expand early prototype testing to capture more cross-role feedback between renters, owners, and captains before handoff.
